The Seed Stitch Sound: A community art project to celebrate our waters
by: Filed under About SSFY, Events, Salem | Comments (3)Ok gang, I’m super excited about this group project that I’m organizing. I’m sure many of you have seen and been totally inspired by Margaret Wilhielm’s crochet hyperbolic coral reef projects. Well me too, but we don’t live in a place that is known for it’s coral reefs. Being a New Englander through and through and a die hard beach, ocean, shore, sand and sail kind of gal, I’m putting my own twist on it.

Muscle Shells
In September we will be constructing an underwater environment inspired by New England Waters, sort of like The Seed Stitch Sound. We’ll be creating many of the elements that will go into this shop exhibit but we’d like to involve all of you. So put your thinking caps on to see how you can manipulate fiber to create some wonderfully New England underwater gems. Think eel grass, jelly fish, lobsters (uncooked of course), felted rocks, cod, minnows, periwinkles, spider crabs, etc. We’d like to try to stay true to marine life of our area, but of course we always welcome a bit of creative license around these parts.

Cod Fish
We’d like to have all submissions as of September 1st. We’ll be posting an inspiration board in the shop in the coming weeks. As well to really make this a community event, we’ll be hosting a lecture series throughout September, every Friday night, with different local experts talking about some super cool marine focused topics. Schedule in the works but this series is not to be missed and open to non-fiberholics too so please spread the word to all your other eco-conscious NE friends.

Eeegrass
I was so excited to take a class last night at Boston Bead Company across the street from Seed Stitch. When I saw this posted on their site I registered instantly. What do you think?

So cute right?
It’s still a bit chilly here in New England, but I’m desperate for Spring and am trying to infuse it in my life anywhere I can. Now I’m literally wearing Spring!
P.S. I know that I could use a manicure.
AddA great new magazine: Feature on Seed Stitch!
by: Filed under About SSFY, Books and Mags, Salem | Comment (0)There is a great new knitting magazine on the market — Knitting Today! Magazine. It’s a great new publication and in it’s inaugural issue, Seed Stitch was featured!

The article was written by Meganne Fabrega and we’re flattered by her kind words about our shop. Look how fabulous our summer picnic display looks!
Aside from our fab feature in the publication and a wonderful shout out to local favorite eateries, the magazine is full of approachable projects for you, your family and your home. The layout of the publication is also super hip and cool. Cute updated styling, features, and a fun sort of “scrap book” feel. Definitely worth a peek!
AddIt’s the Witch City and we’re in full swing. Get spooky with us!

We're a little witchy
Halloween in Salem is whole season from October first through the big day.

Don't we all have yarn on the brain?
We think it’s time to knit a spell around these parts. How about you?
AddAnd the Blue Ribbon Goes to…..
by: Filed under Customer Projects, Designers, Salem | Comment (1)Our very own Laurie Bellin! So many state and county fairs have amazing hand craft exhibits. Unfortunately, ours (Topsfield Fair) has in years past been a bit lack luster. HOWEVER, last year the Fair decided to really step things up last year and the quality and interesting things submitted have been wonderful.
Some of the top talents from around our area have participated, including Laurie Bellin. If you haven’t met Laurie yet, she’s a wonderful part of our team. She is an amazing teacher and is also some of the stitchery behind our finishing and fixes services at Seed Stitch.
This year Laurie submitted a garment in the pattern design exhibit at the Fair and won a Blue Ribbon!

Isn't it wonderful!
If you’re in the shop and see Laurie, please make sure to congratulate her. We may even be lucky enough to have it on display following the close of the Fair.
AddRowan Magazine 47 is here!
by: Filed under Books and Mags, Gift Ideas, Products, Salem | Comment (0)As we know, Rowan hardly ever disappoints and they’ve succeeded again with Rowan Magazine 47 (Buy it now). It’s out on shelves now, in our store, and up online. It’s a lovely taste of spring during this particularly cold and snowy stretch of our winter season here in New England.

Doesn't this cover just make you want to spin around
This issue has several lovely “stories”, which is how Rowan Magazine organizes the collections, and some great features. The first story is Serenity, which is a deeply feminine story inspired by the serene beauty of far off places. Next up is Jamboree, which is a fun cheery collection for both men and women and is a bit retro and reminiscent of some of my favorite 80’s classics. There is also Halcyon days which is beautifully inspired by the scenery of Malta.
There is also a great online feature showcased in the magazine by none other than Kaffe Fassete. It’s a nice treat and a must see.

Beautiful color
As we know at Seed Stitch, crochet is really coming into it’s own this year. We have so much interest in it and have run tons of crochet classes this winter. Well the industry is really starting to hear the crochet drum beat and Rowan is sure to answer with some amazing crochet designs in this issue and a soon to be released crochet collection that we’ll stock as well.

Fashion and Crochet Meet
Simply lovely right? Don’t miss out on this great issue. It’s a keeper!

This might be one I have to make

I’m so excited to announce that we are organizing a yarn crawl this spring to some of Boston’s North Shore’s amazing yarn shops.
As many of you already know, Boston’s North Shore is an amazing place and we have a wealth of awesome fiber shops, each with their own personality and something special to offer. As the new kid on the block, I decided it would be fun to get us all together and organize a crawl just when we are fighting the last doldrums of winter and need something to really look forward to.

We have nine amazing stores participating. Stay tuned for more info in the coming days.

New Knitting Shirt from Seed Stitch
by: Filed under About SSFY, Products, Salem | Comment (1)Ok I’m so excited about this post today. We recently received our new Seed Stitch Fine Yarn shirts and I love them! As some of you may know I spend part of my weeks in the city working in public relations and marketing for healthcare and life science companies and have for more than 10 years. So I think that this shirt marries that life with my life as a yarn store owner.
Welcome Yarnamoritis — every fiber lovers disease “an insatiable love of yarn”. With the route of the word obvious to us all “yarn”, combined with the Latin word “amor” meaning love and the suffix “-itis” denoting a disease.

This is a super soft long sleeved waffle weave shirt
Be the first one on your block to own one!

Of course the only prescription to treat this disease is Seed Stitch Fine Yarn
They come in a wide range of sizes from small to 2XL, but they are unisex and run a little big. Add
Well tomorrow is October 1st in Salem MA and the official start to the Halloween season and our official start to Fall festivities. Tomorrow night is one of my favorite nights of the year in Salem. It’s the Haunted Happenings Grande Opening Parade and if you haven’t been it’s fantastic. It’s Thursday too and our night for community knitting. We’ll be open so please feel free to join us for the parade and some knitting. Please do plan ahead if you’ll be joinnig us because parking is likely to be a bit less straight forward than normal and there will be some street closures as we get closer to the start of the parade. It will be by 21 Front St. at about 7:00 and we’ll have some refreshemnts and treats for those of you excited to join us. We’ll also have an adorable little girl that I know in a nurse costume and I’m sure a few of her adorable little friends.
There are a ton of awesome things planned around town this month. Don’t let the crowds scare you away. There are still places to park and great activities to enjoy. For more info check out the Haunted Happenings website.
AddLocal Fundraising Opportunity: Parents United Salem Common Playground
by: Filed under Salem | Comment (0)I wanted to share a great opportunity to make a fun impact on the Salem Community. A fantastic parents group, called Parents United here in Salem, MA, is working to put the final fundraising touches on a brand new and beautiful playground to replace our aging and sad one in Salem Common. For many families who live in Salem, as in other urban communities, the Salem Common is our backyard. But this playground will also be an amazing asset to the community as we try to attract visitors and tourists to our great city to spend the day and enjoy all that there is to offer.
We all have the opportunity to make an impact in this playground effort by making a donation and Parents United has come up with a fantastic and affordable donation option — Donate a brick inscribed with a message of your choosing. I’ll be so excited when Mazie and I head to the playground and she runs around to find her very own brick. Seed Stitch will also have a brick as part of our commitment to the community of which we are a part.
If you have an interest and the means, please make a donation.
